Excerpt from the owner:

The Longhouse, Chiangmai

Birdsong. Inspiration, Peace. These are the words that capture the magic of this home.

The journey to building the teak house and redwood house took 40 years! I fell in love with Asia in 1967, as a Peace Corps teacher in Sarawak, Malaysia. I lived in a longhouse at the base of a karst hill, next to a river, in a Dayak village.

Now, I have come full circle, discovering Asia anew, as the perfect place to retire, to “rewire”.  To write, reflect, meditate.

Walking the land I was fortunate to acquire, I realized that the best kind of house to build would be one affording me and all guests a view to the pond directly in front and Doi Suthep, a sacred mountain, in the distance. This land, of 3.5 RAI called for a long house, like the one in Borneo, with entries to all rooms coming off a deep, full-length veranda. The house draws upon “ancient wisdom” of cross-ventilation, orientation to catch the prevailing breeze, balconies and verandas, and wide overhanging eaves to provide shade. There is little distinction between inside and outside. Its open floor plan and high vaulted ceilings are environmentally sound and aesthetically pleasing. Since my architects are well known for traditional Thai design, we capped the house with a Lanna (Northern Thai kingdom) roof.

Robert Powell included the house in his 2013 book, The Modern Thai House: Innovative Design in Tropical Asia. The Thai edition of House and Garden magazine (www.baanlaesuan.com) featured the house in 2010, and B-1 Magazine (November 2009) highlighted the house’s innovative pure white cement walls and pillars (never requiring painting).

The Longhouse is in Sansai Orchard, a mixed community “mu baan” (village), of Thais and Westerners, academics, international development careerists, engineers and an artist. Nine houses privately sited. In the Orchard mangoes, lumyai, lychee, bananas, and papaya are grown. There’s lots of space and privacy.  Sansai Orchard is 25 minutes from the airport and about 20 minutes north of town.  We are adjacent to MaeJo University, Thailand’s best-known agricultural university, with experimental fields and fishponds, a running track and Olympic-sized swimming pool (open to the public). Coming out the gate, you may meet a water buffalo. There are 3 golf courses within 15 minutes drive.

Food is central to Thai culture! Within 20 minutes’ drive one can find terrific Thai, Western, and fusion food. Upscale cuisine or local grilled chicken wings, green papaya salad and sticky rice. Watch a glorious sunset from the deck of the longhouse or from the terrace of the Four Seasons Hotel (a short drive) sipping a lemongrass infused vodka martini! If you wish to cook, the local fresh market is just across Mae Jo Road and the more modern (with products from around the world) Rimping Market 10 minutes by car. An organic market is held every Wednesday at the university.
